Cajas National Park is one of the top things to do in Cuenca, a true natural wonder located just a short 40-minute drive from Cuenca, and it's a must-see destination for any nature lover visiting Southern Ecuador. With an area of over 70,533 acres, the park boasts an impressive 200+ lakes, making it one of the most important water sources in the region.

 

But the park's beauty and ecological significance go beyond just its lakes. The park has been recognized internationally for its ecological importance. It has been designated a Wetland of International Importance by RAMSAR, an Area of International Importance for the Conservation of Birds by IBA, and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Itinerary: 

 

Situated a mere 45-minute drive from Cuenca, our Cajas adventure commences at the park's Lower section. We will embark on a 1.5-hour hike around Llaviuco Lake to explore the dense flora, and the chance to see some bird species such as hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, etc. 

 

Furthermore, we will explore the Toreadora refuge area to embark on a captivating 2-hour moderate hike through the ecosystems of moorlands, wetlands, and lakes. At the top of the list of attractions is the polylepis tree forest San Luis, The experience will evoke the atmosphere found in the "The Lord of the Rings". Our naturalist guide will in insights about the park's diverse flora and fauna that call the park home, as well as share cultural and historical facts. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy and capture great photographs of the breathtaking vistas of the nearby lakes embraced by the mountains shaping the western Andes of Ecuador. 

 

Before returning to Cuenca, we will have lunch at a traditional restaurant in the area, where the specialty is trout. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available upon request.
